Student Matinees at theREP

Students experience live theatre while learning curriculum at the same time in one of our historic theatres Proctors, Capital Repertory Theatre or Universal Preservation Hall. At theREP we offer full-length, quality productions during the school day, complete with a post-show talk-back with cast members! 

Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors”

Ever wondered what would happen if you took Bram Stoker’s legendary vampire tale and put in into a blender with the comedic influences of Mel Brooks, Monty Python and the 39 Steps? That’s just what happens in this lightning-fast, laugh-out-loud 90-minute gender-bending, quick-change magical romp.  Famed female vampire hunter, Jean Van Helsing, and her motley company chase Count Dracula from the English Countryside to Transylvania to “other frightening places,” including the Capital Region.  Their antics, complete with loads of local and pop references, brim with enough tongue-in-cheek mayhem to fill your cup of giggles.

Pure Poe: Three Tales of the Macabre” 
by Edgar Allan Poe

One of Capital Rep’s most beloved On-The-Go! touring shows, ”Pure Poe,”  is back! A production of lost loves, mad murders and a prosperous prince attempting to defy death and doom, Edgar Allan Poe’s characters come to life and are told by the master storyteller himself. When the ghost of Edgar Allan Poe returns, he decides the time is ripe to recite his famous poem, The Raven, and much-loved stories ”The Tell-Tale Heart” and ”The Masque of the Red Death.” Wynn Harmon reprises his role as the famed poet in this tour that is sure to spook as well as delight.

The Wizard Of Oz” (RSC Version)

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Revisit your childhood in L. Frank Baum’s beloved classic story, with all the wonderful songs from the award-winning movie.  You’ll meet all your favorite characters from Kansas and the wonderful land of Oz. Follow Dorothy and Toto as they travel the yellow brick road in search of the Wizard, while coming in contact with new friends as well as dangers caused by the Wicked Witch of the West. Sing along with the Munchkins as the show gets the special REP treatment with actor-musicians, delightful new arrangements, and an imaginative setting — in the intimate environment of our new theatre.  You’ll leave the show feeling braver, smarter with your heart wide open!

Harriet Tells It Like It Is” 
by Karen Jones Meadows 
Directed by Margaret E. Hall with Associate Director/Dramaturg Susan Spain

Travel back in time and journey north on the Underground Railroad with Harriet Tubman in this special adaptation. Harriet shares her story of bravery, resilience, and triumph as she fights for her freedom and the freedom of countless other African American slaves. Harriet’s account comes to life with live accompaniment from a professional African drummer. This narrative truly demonstrates the power of one individual to affect and inspire the lives of many.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream” 
by William Shakespeare 
Directed by Maggie Mancinelli-Cahill 

In a world where women are captured and married to the highest bidder, what are four unrequited young lovers to do on a Midsummer’s night? Of course: run away into the dream-like arms of an enchanted forest where sprites lurk and fairies rule. While a feuding Fairy King and Queen are at war, their paths are crossed by Bottom, Quince and their friends presenting a play within a play. Chief mischief-maker Puck is on-hand to ensure that the gender-bending course of true love is anything but smooth and games of fantasy, love and dreams lead to transformation in Shakespeare’s most beguiling comedy.
