All internships are unpaid but can count towards educational credit.

Our internships are designed for undergraduate and graduate students with in-depth experience working in a not-for-profit arts venue. Training is often supplemented with discussions and workshops with directors, designers and senior staff who provide insight into their specific roles and the overall management of the company.

Our intern supervisors in each discipline are selected based on their dedication to mentorship and shaping the future of their field. Our intern supervisor ensures that interns are not only gaining valuable skills but also receiving regular support and feedback.

Internships with Proctors Collaborative are:

  • Part-time (12-20 hours per week)
  • Monday-Friday (night and weekend hours may be available, depending on the internship)
  • Applications will be considered on a rolling basis for Fall, Spring and Summer terms.
  • Unpaid, but can count towards educational credit.

Internships

The primary worksite for internships with Proctors is 432 State Street Schenectady, NY 12305


Accounting internship

Available during Fall, Spring and Summer terms.

This internship reports to the Controller. The finance department at Proctors manages accounts for Proctors, theREP and UPH. Responsibilities can include processing cash receipts, accounts payable, posting, monthly department reconciliations, assisting with the budgeting process, contracts administration, preparing for the Theatre’s annual audit and other day-to-day needs of the department. The position affords a window into all aspects of theatre operations plus involvement in activities in other departments. Ideal candidates will be interested in theatre and/or financial management, be detail-oriented, have a good interpersonal demeanor and have basic computer and data entry skills.


Company/production management internship

Available during Fall and Spring terms, some nighttime and weekend hours may be required.

This intern reports directly to the Production Manager. Responsibilities include assisting with advancing and providing the needs of Proctors productions; setting labor calls, renting equipment, arranging artist hospitality/accommodations/transport, and assisting with event settlement. This position is available in the Fall or Spring. Ideal candidates have an interest in production and/or company management, are detail-oriented, self-sufficient and have a positive attitude. A valid driver’s license is required.


Relationships development internship

Available during Fall, Spring and Summer terms, some nighttime and weekend hours may be required.

This internship reports to the Annual Funds Director in the Relationships Department. The department is responsible for cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors and supporters of Proctors, theREP, and UPH. Responsibilities include preparing and delivering donor communications; assisting with solicitation efforts; and collecting data for potential donors, patrons or prospective donors. Ideal candidates will be interested in working in a non-profit industry, be detailed oriented, have customer service experience, be organized and have moderate computer skills.


Marketing internships

Available during Fall, Spring and Summer terms.

Internship Focuses Include:

These internships report directly to a member of the Marketing team. The marketing department is a dynamic department that manages the marketing plans and community outreach for Proctors, UPH and theREP. Responsibilities can involve dissemination of marketing materials, assisting with community outreach, participating in marketing meetings and brainstorming, researching outreach techniques, working with street teams, assisting with community activities and events, contributing to social media and other duties as assigned. All opportunities in this department provide each intern with a well-rounded marketing agency experience while focusing on their interest.


Graphic design internship

Available during Fall, Spring and Summer terms.

This internship reports to the Art Director. Responsibilities can include the creation of a variety of promotional advertising pieces that include media-ready text, graphics and photos, graphic preparation, color production and layout of promotional advertising, managing creative service requests and organization of all collateral produced. Ideal candidates have a working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, experience with layout design, production and offset printing preparation, are able to work independently, be self-starting and have a good interpersonal demeanor. A portfolio review will be necessary.


Information technology internship

Available during Spring and Summer terms.

This internship reports to the Information Technology Support Specialist. This department is responsible for overseeing almost all networks and systems, including end-user support for Proctors, theREP and UPH. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to provisioning devices for employee use, making and deploying Ethernet cables, maintaining departmental & end-user documentation, maintaining ticket scanners and monitoring ticket scanning during matinee and evening performances, collecting and compiling data through the auditing of employees and assisting with support help tickets. Ideal candidates will need to be detail-oriented, have a basic understanding of computer systems, and have an eagerness to learn. A positive attitude and an ability to work with others is also a must. Experience with Apple computers and Microsoft Office are required.


Programming internship

Available during Fall, Spring and Summer terms.

This intern reports directly to the Director of Programming and will work with all members of the department. Job duties of this internship will shift with each semester based on the booking and planning cycle of the department. Responsibilities include researching local and national entertainment acts, assisting in the creation of offer sheets and contracts, organizing and maintaining event files, and assisting with ticket data research and reporting. The programming Intern will attend all programming department meetings and will assist the department in the overall strategy. Ideal candidates have an interest in theatre and music of all kinds, possess strong communication skills, are willing to learn ticketing software, and have Microsoft Word and Excel fluency.


Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Access (EDIA) internship

Available during Fall, Spring and Summer terms

This internship reports directly to the EDIA Officer. It is a great opportunity to gain experience, mentorship and insight into the administrative functions of theatre. Proctors Collaborative is seeking an intern that has high energy, is thoughtful in their contribution, is interested in theatre and most of all able to work with diverse populations and commitment to EDIA initiatives. Responsibilities may include assisting the EDIA officer to ensure proper hiring practices, staff training, potential community partnerships and inclusive educational programs.


Television production internship

Available during Fall, Spring and Summer terms.

Internship Focuses Include:

  • Video content creation
  • Video editing
  • Station direction

This internship reports to the Open Stage Media Station Director. Proctors was designated as manager and operator of public, educational and government access cable television by the City of Schenectady and spurred the creation of a new broadcast entity, Open Stage Media at Proctors (OSM). Responsibilities can include programming (including in-putting shows into server and scheduling), video editing, social media engagement and record keeping. Ideal candidates will be detail-oriented, have a good interpersonal demeanor and ability to self-start projects. Experience with computers and Microsoft Office are required.


Internships with the Collaborative School of the Arts

Special event/HSMTA internship

Only available in the spring term, January-May.

Join the Proctors Collaborative team in producing a one-of-a-kind regional event in partnership with the national Broadway League organization! The High School Musical Theatre Awards is Proctors celebration of outstanding student achievement in high school musical theatre. This annual program celebrates and awards regional high schools in the onstage and backstage aspects of their high school musicals. The winners of the Best Actor and Best Actress awards go onto the National High School Musical Theatre Awards ® AKA the Jimmy Awards ® to compete for Best Actor or Best Actress in the nation.

While this is a year-round program, the intern would report to the Collaborative School of the Arts staff during the spring. The intern would take part in the activities across Proctors Collaborative which include – attending meetings, collecting and organizing data, marketing, and social media, and developing strategies for consistent and effective preparation for the final ceremony in May! Ideal candidates should have experience in Microsoft Word, Excel and a love for musical theatre!

Summer programs, education & community outreach internships

Available during the Summer term, some nighttime and weekend hours may be required.

The Collaborative School of the Arts offers a full summer of creative and performing arts programs in dance, theatre, music, film and more for all ages and skill levels. Students learn from industry professionals who provide pre-professional training in the arts. Some interns will serve as teaching assistants to professional teaching artists. Our Summer Programs serve students ages 6 – 19.

Technical and production internship

Available during Fall and Spring terms.

Internship focuses include:

  • Theatrical Lighting
  • Sound Engineering
  • Costume Construction

This internship reports to the Production Manager and appropriate shop manager. Focus availability will depend on the technical needs of the shows in a given season. Ideal candidates will have a minimum of two years technical experience in their field of interest or other relevant job training. Interns must be able to work independently, be detail-oriented and a self-starter.


Dramaturgy internship

Available during Fall, Spring and Summer terms.

Research and dramaturgy internship reports to the Associate Artistic Director. This position will gather information and research for the study guides that are sent out to teachers for the student matinees and touring productions. This position will also assist with the NEXT ACT! PLAY FESTIVAL. Ideal candidates will be detail-oriented, interested in theatre and have previous writing and play-reading experience. Please submit a brief writing sample, 500 words or less, with the application.


Community partnership internship

Available during Fall, Spring and Summer terms.

This internship reports to the Associate Artistic Director. This internship will focus on building and maintaining relationships between theREP and community organizations. This position reports to the Associate to the Artistic Director. This position will help maintain the calendar of the Neighbors for Neighbors community program, be in touch with community members, research and design community programs and events with the staff of theREP.


Company management internship

Available during Fall, Spring and Summer terms.

Under our Company Manager, this intern will work one on one with visiting artists, making sure the day-to-day needs of all company members are taken care of. In addition, the intern will have a role in our on-site casting office. Duties include: set up and clean up of cast meals, compiling information for visiting artists and members of the press, creating welcome baskets, and filing casting paperwork. It’s a great opportunity to experience our company as a whole.


Acting instruction internship

Available during the Summer term.

This internship will work as a teaching assistant for all School of the Performing Arts at theREP’s summer programs. Responsibilities can include facilitating check-in and check-out of students each day; leading acting games at the instructor’s direction, and leading warm-ups. Specifically, with the Summer Stage Young Acting Company responsibilities can include acting as an assistant stage manager and/or assistant to the director/assistant director when needed such as with dramaturgical work, taking blocking notes, line running, acting as mentor and leader of the acting company during breaks, lunches, and rehearsals. Also, this position will be cast in the Summer Stage Young Acting Company and will also be a member of the acting company.

Non-Profit management internship

This internship assists the staff of UPH in event management, donor and community relations, and fundraising. It is an excellent opportunity to experience various aspects of non-profit management while working for a well-known community-based nonprofit organization.
