Time: | 7:00pm - 9:00pm |
Overview: | 7 p.m. Saturday, May 13, 2023 - back on the MainStage at Proctors |

During the spring musical season, schools are adjudicated by a panel of educators, theatre experts and industry professionals in 9 performance categories or technical categories. When all of the evaluations have been completed, scores are tabulated and certified. The highest score determines the winner in each category and winners are announced during the awards ceremony.
The HSMTA program culminates on the MainStage at Proctors with an awards ceremony, modeled after the Tony Awards®, to recognize outstanding musical theatre productions and students. Winners are announced for each category interspersed with lively production numbers from the shows nominated for Best Musical and finalists for Best Actor and Best Actress. Additionally, students selected from each participating school perform in the opening and closing numbers for an inclusive and celebratory event, also featuring a full orchestra and music direction and choreography by theatre professionals.
The winners of Best Actress and Best Actor go on to represent the Capital Region in The Jimmy Awards®/The National High School Musical Theatre Awards® (NHSMTA®). This program impacts more than 140,000 students who participate in high school musical theatre competitions sponsored by presenters of Touring Broadway productions throughout the United States. The first (30) thirty schools that meet all eligibility criteria and submit a completed application will be guaranteed participation. Applications will open in fall 2022.
